3 Reasons Why You Should Consider Doing Something Unusual To Celebrate Your Wedding

It hardly needs to be said that most people put a lot of care and attention into their weddings – often saving and planning for years before going ahead and actually setting their special days into motion.

There’s a certain “template” that tends to define how wedding is done, in a given culture. To a large extent, these templates work really well and have plenty of value. But, if you have your wedding done entirely “by the numbers,” you might be missing out on a few tricks.

Whether it means investigating magic mirror hire, or looking at ways to have your wedding done in a treehouse, here are a few reasons why you should consider doing something unusual to celebrate your wedding – or at least, why your wedding should include some unusual elements.

  • Because things that are unusual and out of the ordinary can form powerful “moments” and memories

In the book, “The Power of Moments,” by Dan and Chip Heath, the authors work hard to make the point that it’s the key “moments” of our lives – those memorable and elevated experiences that are set apart from the ordinary – that really give life much of its meaning and power.

Among other things, it seems that novelty is a big element in forming, deepening, and solidifying these powerful “moments.”

Your wedding will no doubt be very memorable whatever the case – but by adding some unusual elements to it, you may help to bring a lot of the details into higher definition for the years to come.

  • Because we are all-natural novelty-seekers, and unusual experiences are often more intriguing and exciting

As human beings, we are all-natural “novelty-seekers,” to one degree or another.

It seems like the neurotransmitter dopamine specifically exists in order to motivate us to pursue things that we don’t yet have. And this makes perfect sense when you consider that early human society was nomadic, and our hunter gatherer ancestors had to be pretty motivated to go out and get things like food and firewood.

Unfortunately, the dopaminergic system that fuels novelty-seeking behaviour can be abused – as it is in the case of substance addiction. But, it can also be harnessed to help us achieve the things we want to achieve in life.

Since we’re all born with a desire to seek and experience new things, adding some unusual experiences to your wedding will help you to scratch that inbuilt itch for yourself and for your guests, and can make the whole thing more intriguing and memorable.

  • An unusual activity can really help to underscore the “difference” and importance of the occasion

The historian of religion, Mircea Eliade, wrote that a major element of religious rituals is the fact that they mark a distinction between the “ordinary” world, and the “sacred” world.

While you may or may not view your wedding through a religious or spiritual lens, there’s no denying that a big part of the reason for a wedding ceremony is to make a commitment, in a way that stands above and beyond ordinary and mundane everyday life.

By adding some unusual activities to your wedding that you wouldn’t normally engage in, you can help to underscore this “difference,” and heighten the meaning of the occasion.
