Wedding Cake Money Saving Tips
Wedding cake is tradition, but if you don’t really like cake, or if a dessert exists that makes you jump up and down with excitement why not offer that in lieu of cake. It is after all the most special of days for you and the groom, so why not share your most cherished desserts? This is also an excellent way to save money (unless you’re having truffles helicoptered over from Belgium.)
Note: An extra tip for brides who plan on having a lot of chocolate treats at their event – the price of chocolate is speculated to increase due to diseased crops
1. If you choose to make your own wedding cake, or have a dessert table, be sure to decorate the table. You can do this inexpensively by placing boxes or containers of different heights on the table and cover with a decorative or shimmering fabric. Bunch sections of the fabric up to create an elegant affect. Decorate the table with flowers, flower petals or colorful fruit.
2. Remember if you decide to make your own cake that you must level off each layer before staking them. To level a cake you slice a thin layer off the top to ensure you’re working with an even surface. If you are adding a filling between layers, first spread a line of frosting around the perimeter of the layer to act as a wall to keep the filling from oozing out. The filling will act as an adhesive for each layer. Consider frosting the cake with a classic white frosting and decorate with colorful mini berries or grapes. You can even add the fruit leaves to add height to the cake.
3. A good way to secure the different layers (once you’re at the reception site) is to use eight inch dowels in the middle of the layers. Use enough to create a sturdy column for the next layer (about seven or eight dowels.) Apply an adhesive to the top of each dowel and center the next tier on top of it (don’t forget to have cardboard underneath each layer!) Repeat this until all layers are on the cake. Add flowers, leaves, fruit or other decorations to hide the dowels.
